About this work
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"Published by CIRCA on the occasion of YOUTH (2023), this series of four hand-signed editions captures moments from Anne Imhof's haunting meditation on freedom, displacement and the fragile possibility of peace. Filmed in Moscow just days before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the work preserves a moment suspended between anticipation and catastrophe, transforming a landscape on the edge of history into a powerful reflection on the uncertainties of the present.\n\nAt the centre of the film is a herd of black horses moving through Severnoye Chertanovo, a modernist housing district on the outskirts of Moscow. Running freely across snow-covered fields and between vast residential blocks, the animals appear both vulnerable and defiant, embodying a sense of collective movement that resists easy interpretation. Accompanied by the music of J. S. Bach's St Matthew Passion, the work unfolds as a quiet meditation on community, survival and the enduring human search for freedom.\n\nOriginally intended for presentation at Moscow's Garage Museum, YOUTH was cancelled following the outbreak of war. One year later, CIRCA brought the work to audiences worldwide through a global public broadcast spanning London, Hong Kong, Berlin, Milan, Los Angeles, New York, Seoul and Tokyo. Released alongside the commission, this series of editions extends the project's central questions into physical form. As Imhof reflected: \"What if Youth is freedom? What if Youth is hope? What if Youth is peace?\" These questions continue to resonate, inviting viewers to consider both the fragility of peace and the possibility of imagining a different future."}]},{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"\n"}]}]}
