About this work
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"Published by CIRCA on the occasion of VideoVirus (2021), Great AIDS (Cadmium Red Light) revisits one of the most influential activist images in contemporary art. Created by AA Bronson and General Idea, the work draws upon the collective's iconic AIDS image, first developed in 1987 as a direct response to the silence, fear and stigma surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic."}]},{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"Appropriating Robert Indiana's universally recognised LOVE motif, General Idea transformed a symbol of popular culture into a powerful tool for public intervention. At a time when AIDS was frequently ignored or misrepresented, the artists sought to make the word impossible to avoid. Through posters, paintings, sculptures, magazines, billboards and public actions, the image spread virally through cities around the world, challenging prejudice while creating visibility for communities affected by the epidemic. As AA Bronson later reflected, the work functioned as an advertising campaign for a disease that few people were willing to discuss."}]},{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"Released forty years after the first reported cases of AIDS, this hand-signed silkscreen edition accompanied VideoVirus, a new moving-image commission created by AA Bronson for CIRCA in partnership with UNAIDS and Terrence Higgins Trust. Broadcast across public screens in London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Milan, New York, Seoul and Tokyo, the project reimagined General Idea's original concept of the \"image virus\" for a global audience, celebrating four decades of activism while supporting the international ambition of achieving zero new HIV transmissions by 2030. Both a historical landmark and a continuing call to action, the work remains a powerful reminder of art's capacity to challenge indifference, transform public consciousness and inspire collective change.\n"}]}]}
