About this work
{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"Published by CIRCA on the occasion of SOME WEATHER (2021), this signed edition by Nikita Gale extends a powerful meditation on visibility, labour and recognition. Combining a giclée print with an applied stick-on thermometer, the work transforms a familiar measuring device into both a physical object and a symbolic marker of the pressures, conditions and unseen forces that shape cultural production.\n\nCreated alongside Gale's four-part public commission for CIRCA, SOME WEATHER examines the often-overlooked contributions of Black women whose voices helped define some of rock music's most celebrated recordings. Drawing on archival footage of backing vocalists associated with artists including David Bowie and The Rolling Stones, the project reflects on the creative labour that sustains cultural history while frequently remaining uncredited. Throughout the films, performers are obscured and transformed beyond easy recognition, shifting attention away from individual identity and towards broader questions of authorship, visibility and value.\n\nPresented in collaboration with Chisenhale Gallery, SOME WEATHER appeared across public screens in London, Seoul and Tokyo, transforming monumental advertising displays into atmospheric interventions that altered the visual climate of each city. Across four chapters, Heat, Fog, Blizzard and Rain, Gale used colour, abstraction and obscured archival footage to re-orientate audiences towards the unsung creative labour of Black women in rock music. The accompanying edition carries this idea into a more intimate form, using the thermometer as a reminder that culture, like weather, is shaped by invisible systems, accumulated energies and the labour of individuals whose contributions too often remain unseen.\n"}]}]}
